Ansel in Color

Adams-Color

Yellow Mountain, Glacier National Park, Montana, 1948

“I have yet to see — much less produce — a color photograph that fulfills my concepts of the objectives of art.”
– Ansel Adams

An excellent article by TIME online on the color photography of Ansel Adams – the black and white master, in color.

Received 8 rolls of film back from being processed, courtesy Citizen Photo of Portland OR. Shot, shipped, processed, and scanned one x one. Images dating back to my time in PDX to july 4th festivites and a first attempt to capture Glacier Nat’l Park at night. Above are some multi-image builds / MIBs. A project the I have been working on and a great way to get large images even larger. Looking to build 48″ +  prints consisting of landscapes both day and night.

more being than seeing

Sight Unseen 5 11

“I have a private gallery, but, unfortunately, I am the only one who can visit it. Others can enter by means of my photographs, but they do not see the originals, just the reproductions.” – Evgan Bavcar

A gallery of images from Sight Unseen: Photographs by blind photographers. These images are amazing, not just for composition, but the means in which the photographers gained courage to combat difficulties in taking the images. As a photographer I respect their ambition in creating the images. As a photographer with sight problems myself I can only build and learn. In the past I have dealt with partial blindness; a blur to black and white, before the fade to black in my left eye. My good eye as it is. Fingers crossed as this has not happened in years. Though I love my profession, 10+ hours on the computer a day is my present, it hopefully is not my future. This may be one cause for me having pursued night photography.  Calm, quiet, and dark. I’m just happy to share what I have seen, and to leave visual examples of it for others to enjoy.

This one is for Cynthia, an amazing woman and photographer in her own right.

Back to 100

pdx409_steelbrdg-web

And round two comes out clean. I was able to get out and shoot a couple rolls of Kodak 100vs. I have not used this in quite awhile, but it seems to work better with the lights. Tonight was a nice ride to north Portland and back. Via a few overlooks and interstate.

found one, lost one

pdx209_hthn-brg01-prv1

After a night of riding Memphis taking night shots of the city, almost two years ago. I managed to loose a roll of film, some great compositions. Well the missing roll of film showed up yesterday. Unfortunately, it was double exposed onto a roll that I shot recently in Portland. Not even sure how that one happened. Loose a roll of exposed film. Find it two years later, and then shoot it again. I’m all for adding to my 2XPOSURE series, but this one caught me off guard. A couple off good mistakes, and a lesson learned. I’m out for the next couple of nights trying to re-shoot a few compositions and drop my aperture.

Stuck in Cincinnati :: Trying to keep up with Ashley, jet setting across the world, working on the line production. After snow delayed leaving Bozeman, it’s Cincinnati to JFK, to Dubai, and on to India. From spring snow to the hottest place on earth for two weeks. Hurry up.

DETAILS :: aside from the being overexposed due to the double exposure, and sitting for two years. The shot above shows some geese at the banks of the Hawthorn Bridge in Portland. Neon lights from Beale street in Memphis can be see overlapping in some detail.

round one

Found some old shots of a vintage Hawthorn frame. Taken at the Bozeman Bike Kitchen. First round try with the automatic HDR build. I wasn’t too impressed with the initial output; so most of the color is from (3) three HDR builds multiplied as layers. Shoot to test.

another hobby

ben-willmore

c Ben Willmore route 66

Interested in HDR photography for a bit now. Just never enough to try shooting it myself. So today I finally took some time to do a little research and find out just what needs to be done. With the spring colors and long sunsets here in Portland, I think it’s bout time to start another photography project.

Some great examples and tutorials from Ben Willmore. His series on the Sulton Sea are worth a couple views, along with his constant travelling. Get lost at his site for a bit folks. HERE

Anaconda and Butte Montana are going to get some needed representation in HDR in the near future.

MPH series

rwilsonmph-409

Got a new series up on the FLICKR board. For all those road trips with the camera, I found that stopping to take shots is a mandatory. But stopping > shooting > driving > repeat, just isn’t efficient. So began the MPH series. Creating some long exposure images out the window of the moving vehicle. 63mph was the magic number on this last trip. No view finder necessary as most of the shots are taken while driving, and only for generalized compositions or color schemes.

– – – – – – – – – –

Amateur professionals only :: I don’t endorse or recommend this folks; maybe stick to the passenger seat. But it sure makes a long road trip fun. Collecting what you can and viewing it later. Most shots come with some color manipulation, just for the hell of it. Imagination, use it.

*the featured photo was actually taken while standing still in Eltopia WA. Though the sante fe was travelling about 60mph.
